DIY Mason Jar Decor

I am always looking for new crafty idea’s, and home decor is an area that I love to focus on. Naturally, during the Holiday season this past year I wanted to come up with something simple yet pretty to craft up. I also wanted it to have multipurpose so that it can be changed and used to match the season.

My boyfriends mother actually found this idea on Pinterest, so we decided to give it a try. DIY Mason Jar Vases. She chose to do a Christmas version, and I decided to try something that could be interchangeable. We were both very happy with the outcome of our project, it took very little time, preparation and money.

Here is what you need;

  • A Mason Jar – You can find these virtually anywhere from the grocery store, the dollar store or even in Nonna’s pantry
  • Chalk Paint – Most websites suggested that we get a more expensive paint from a craft store, but I went to Walmart and picked up the Chalk Paint they had there and it worked just fine. The paint was a bit thicker than the premium product, but that just meant that you don’t need as many coats
  • A paint brush/sponge- Medium size worked best
  • Finishing Wax – I also bought the one from Walmart for this
  • Sand Paper- This is what you will use to give the jar a distressed look
  • Clean Cloth- You would use the clean clothe to put the wax on after you have painted and sanded the jar
  • a box or piece of wood – You can really use anything. Julia used old barn board and cut it down to make it a box and I just used a small piece of barn board as a “platter” to showcase my mason jars
  • Decor- Depending on the season that you want to use your jars for, gather the appropriate decor. For example, Christmas Jars could use Cranberries, twigs, holy, bells and twine. For a summer jar you can get real or fake flowers and greenry

Below you can see what I chose. Now picture these filled with beautiful flowers and greenery, put it in the middle of the table and use it as a center piece.

Pants That Feel Like Butter

I frequently go to a Yoga Studio chain in the Mississauga/Oakville area called Power Yoga. I have to admit that it took me awhile to warm up to doing yoga as a workout, as I am not naturally flexible I found it. The reason that I took to Power Yoga is because it is in an extremely hot room, which made the movements more enjoyable for me and after awhile, I would even say soothing. I also grew to really like one particular instructor Pino who was extremely motivating and uplifting. His personality was infectious and as time passed, I learned to love hot yoga.

Along with loving hot yoga, came some things that I did NOT love. The biggest being that I sweat a lot! After class I would change into dry set of clothes but due to the stickiness, I was never very comfortable. While travelling back from an all girls trip with my Nonna, mom, and sister I saw a lady wearing an awesome pair of pants. A pair of pants that most of the yoga world are familiar with, the Harem pant. They were the perfect solution for my post hot yoga classes, not to mention great for travelling as well.

I went home and immediately started looking up different Harem pants that I could potentially purchase online. I found a few options, but most were of patterns that I did not particularly love. They were also more of a cotton material, and in my mind the perfect pant would be made of a buttery soft and comfortable pant. This got me thinking that maybe I would design a pants similar to a Harem pant, but modernize them a little. I went to the fabric store and started playing around with different designs and chose materials that felt so incredible soft against my skin. I finally made something that worked, just as I imagined it.

I have to admit, the hot yoga class that I went to I brought my pants with me. Excited to try them on after my workout, I pulled them out of my pants and threw them on. They did exactly what I had hoped. They  were the perfect thing for me to throw on and not feel gross and sticky after an intense and sweat workout. I also use them every time I travel a far distance, I take them with me because they are so easy to throw on and give you all the room to need to feel comfortable. As I told my friends about it, they don’t me how much they loved the idea. I am in the process of having these made so that I can sell them. I would love some honest opinions about the pants. The idea is that there will be a few different styles, some with more “crotch” than others.

Be A Badass With A Good ASS!

Friday rolls around and the weekend is FINALLY here so naturally you allow yourself to indulge a little more than you normally would. You tell yourself that it is ok because you will have a good workout on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday arrives and you are sitting comfortably wrapped up in a blanket by the fire at the cottage and the last thing that you want to do is workout. So how can you make it fun?

Luckily when this happened to me last weekend, I was at my boyfriends cottage which is perfect for outdoor activities. The best part about winter is that if you dress properly, there are so many fun things that you can do that really don’t feel like a workout but trust me you are working out!

Below I have listed some activities that we did while at the cottage, and truthfully when I finally got off my butt and got moving outside, I felt great!

Cross Country Skiing – Depending on a few factors (weight, speed, terrain), you can burn 250 to 900 calories in an hour.

Snow Shoeing: I weigh about 130 lbs, 5″3 and I would burn about 400 calories an hour

Ice Skating: About 350 calories in an hour, if casually but actively skating

You can look up what you would burn based your factors like your weight, height…etc online.

We did all three of these activities on Saturday, so in total I burned over 1000 calories! I can tell you that when comparing it to going to a spin class, or running on the treadmill feels like way more work and a lot less fun.

There are a ton of options at your fingertips for workout alternatives that can be fun things to do with friends, family or even as a date night. See some more idea’s below:

  • Rock Climbing
  • Obstacle Courses
  • Swimming
  • Hiking
  • Any type of sport; Hockey, Volley, Dodge-ball
  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Surfing
  • Paddle boarding
  • Skiing
  • Snowboarding

Moral of the story, don’t let your workouts become boring and routine. Keep them fresh, and try something new. You will feel better, and look forward to your next activity. Most importantly, you will still feel that burn baby!

Saturdays = Quick Cardio

I don’t know about you, but on the weekends I like relaxing. I am only starting to get back into working out after the Holiday break, so it seems like more of a pain than a pleasure at the moment. My solution; pump out a quick cardio workout. Anything is better than nothing in my opinion.

Below you will find the workout that I am doing.

  • 10 Push-ups
  • 20 High Knees
  • 10 Burpees
  • 20 Lunges
  • 20 Jumping Jacks
  • 10 Burpees
  • 20 High Knees
  • 10 Push-ups
  • 1 Minute Wall Sit (Sit lower at 30 seconds)
  • 20 Jumping Jacks
  • 20 High Knees

*REPEAT X4, 1 MIN BREAK IN BETWEEN SETS*

This workout is simple, you don’t need anything other than your body and a small space. If you have to stop because you are winded, than take a break. Listen to your body, but make sure that you push yourself. If you know it is laziness or self-talk that is preventing you from reaching you goals, push through it. #mind/matter

Off I go to get this done. I know I will be happy after I complete it.

You Are What You Eat

In an earlier post I talked about kicking off the new year with a workout, and how working out naturally makes you want to eat better. Well, after getting my lunch workout in, that rush of achievement came flooding back. I went home proud that I worked out and wanting to keep the healthy start going, so I decided to work on the other aspect of living a healthy lifestyle…food!

For Christmas I received a smoothie recipe book from by boyfriends parents. I have to say that my first impression of it is great! The recipe book starts off by diving into all the different fruits and vegetables that are used throughout the recipe book. It lists the health benefits in each item, as well as the calories. Later in the book, it outline different chapters with different purposes. For example, there is a section of drinks that are suitable for children, a section for green smoothies and even a section for dessert smoothies. There are smoothies and juices that are meant to help with disease’s or health problems as well.

As I looked through the book, I became really excited with all of the possibilities that I had at my fingertips. I am a huge fan of smoothies so this really was a great gift for me. The only thing that was holding me back was; a) the amount of products require to blend a smoothie and b)actually doing it. I suddenly found myself envisioning a smoothie chef in my kitchen. Crazy right?! This thought took me to my next thought. If only I have everything pre-chopped in a bag I would be more inclined to make myself a smoothie every morning. After-all, that is the best part about smoothies! You can get a ton of your daily required nutrition in one drink, if you build them with knowledge. I am in!

I chose three recipes to follow, pulled out my cutting board and got to work. I then took out small Ziplock Bags to put all the ingredients together and throw them in the freezer. BEST. IDEA.EVER! I labelled each bag so that I knew what smoothie I would be drinking. I pre-made a protein smoothie, a green smoothie and a cleansing smoothie. I will not being trying the cleansing smoothie while working, but after a few cheat days this weekend I am glad I will have something to help my digestive system out. This morning I grabbed one of the bags and threw the ingredients into my handy Vita-mix and went to work a happy woman.

I’ve Included some photo’s of the smoothie making process below for your viewing pleasure. Maybe pre-made smoothies will become my next big thing!

Workout Rebound

January has now begun and I have yet to get a workout in. That is all about to change this afternoon as I plan to get a good one in. I am usually pretty good at making sure that I workout at least three times a week, but when you fall off it is hard to get back on.

Let me help motivate you to get started with me today! There are so many great things that come along with working out. You will sleep better, and EVERYONE loves a good night’s sleep…am I right, or am I right?! You naturally want to eat better, even if you eat more your food choices tend to be better. You are able to refocus, you have more drive and motivation to be better but most importantly you will feel better.  Be the BEST YOU starting today with me. Come summer, we will feel pretty F***ing fearless slipping into that little bikini.

Today’s Badass Workout

*Note: Make sure you take at least two minutes to stretch and limber up before getting started, show your body you love it. A little TLC goes a long way.

Cardio:

2 minutes – Light jog to warm up

1 minute – Incline = 1.5, Speed = (4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5…. you decide where you are at, but remember to push yourself just a little beyond your comfort zone)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 2.5, Speed = (4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5..etc)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 3.5, Speed = (4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5..etc)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 4.5, Speed = (4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5..etc)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 5.5, Speed = (4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5..etc)

Time to get off of the treadmill and move to the floor for some body STRENGTH training!

Full Body: This section should take you approximately ten minutes and then guess what…back to the treadmill for that leaning process! Repeat three times

20 dips

20 leg lowers

20 scissor kicks (slow)

20 weighted squats

20 weighted lunges

Cardio:

1 minute – Incline = 15, Speed = (4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0…. you will be pushed out of your comfort zone here)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 10, Speed = (5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0…etc)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 8, Speed = (5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0…etc)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 6, Speed = (5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0…etc)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 1.5, Speed = (5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0…etc)

Rest for 40 seconds – Drop incline, slow your speed and catch your breath

1 minute – Incline = 20 or highest your machine will go, Speed = (5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0…etc)

You know the drill…get on the FLOOR!

Full Body:*Note: if you have bad knees or are not ready to jump, go slow and work on your technique. You will get to those jumps one day, buy listen to your body….REPEAT 3 TIMES

20 toes touches

20 Russian Twists

20 jump squats

20 jump lunges

30 superman to push-up

30 plank rows

AND…..YOU…..ARE…..DONE, for today! Great job I can see that ass perking up already 😉Don’t forget to stretch at the end of your workout and thank your body with tons of water!

Christmas Break Calls for Crafts

One thing that you will learn about me is that I LOVE to craft. I like looking up new idea’s on Pinterest, seeing things at markets or in stores and figuring out how to make it myself. I hope to share some of my crafts, idea’s and methods with you. So, let me start with one of my most recent crafts.

This past Holiday break, one of my favourite crafts was making these beautiful center pieces. In fact, they served as the perfect unique gift to give to people and they are SO well received.

My boyfriend Nick and I spend a lot of time at his parents house in Erin Ontario. This is where a lot of the wood work and crafting happens. There is a ton of space for us to get our hands dirty and his father has all of the tools that are required to make the majority of the craft idea’s we have. He is also very knowledgeable and always has an answer when we hit a road block. Nick is a carpenter so let’s just say I got lucky with the men in my life, considering how much I enjoy DIY projects. In fact, these center pieces were his father’s idea.

What you see above are cedar logs which were previously used for fencing and is how they got that perfect weathered look. All it took was some sanding, varnishing, a drill press (with a 1.5 inch drill bit) and TA DA….a beautiful center piece was the result!

There are so many things that I love about these. They are simple, yet so romantic and they really finish off the “look” you are trying to achieve. Add some candles, flowers, acorns…or whatever natural things you can find to dress it up that suit the season. It really is the perfect touch and I promise that your guest will ask you where you got it from. WINK WINK! (Email me if you’re interested in buying one)
